Mississippi Commercial Applicator Exams for Structural Pest Control

Mississippi does not issue a single commercial applicator exam that authorizes every structural pest control service for hire. MDAC Bureau of Plant Industry administers two individual layers: Commercial Applicator Certification (restricted-use pesticide purchase, application, and supervision) and Operator License category examinations for professional services for a fee. Company licensing, bond, and insurance sit on top - exam success alone does not authorize advertising or billing.

Commercial Applicator Certification is the pesticide layer beneath Mississippi professional-services licensing. MDAC’s Pesticide Program materials describe the certification card as authority to purchase, apply, and supervise restricted-use pesticides in certified categories. It is a prerequisite before Operator License exams if you are not already commercially certified. Categories align between certification and licensing, but professional service licenses exceed commercial certification standards.

Critical limitation. Commercial certification does not authorize advertising, soliciting, or performing pest control for a fee. Passing General Standards alone does not authorize deposits, termite pretreats, or Official Wood Destroying Insect Reports. Fee-for-service work requires Operator License exams plus Company License, bond, and insurance.

Pass score and reciprocity note. MDAC requires 70 percent on General Standards, matching each Operator License category exam. Valid out-of-state commercial certification may use a Reciprocity Form for the certification layer; that never waives Operator License exams.

The Operator License is individual authority to perform professional pest control for hire and is required to own or operate a Mississippi pest control company - Permits cannot own a company. After meeting education or experience qualifications and holding commercial certification when required, candidates pass category Operator License exam(s) at 70 percent and, when starting a firm, submit the license request with company bond and insurance.

Sit each structural category matching services you will perform and place on the Company License: WDIL, GRCL, MBFL, and/or FUML. WDIL includes an optional UPL sub-exam. Operators may hold multiple categories; each additional category requires its own 70 percent exam plus experience prerequisites. Branch supervisors without Operator Licenses use the Permit exam path as bona fide employees with matching-category RTIDs - BPI FAQ materials state no fee to apply or for paper testing at quarterly MSU sittings.

Passing Operator exams does not issue a Company License, satisfy bond or insurance floors, or authorize work before Company License issuance.

BPI reviews qualifications before exam approval - do not treat scheduling as automatic once you pay a computer-testing fee.

WDIL, GRCL, and FUML. High school graduate or equivalent plus at least four years’ experience with a licensed operator within the past six years. Document employment dates carefully; the six-year lookback matters.

Other categories. High school graduate or equivalent plus at least one year’s experience with a licensed operator within the past two years. Confirm which track BPI applies on the current examination application and Section 104 materials. Qualifying education (for example, accredited college coursework in the category) may also apply - follow current BPI application instructions.

Choose categories first, assemble experience proof, secure commercial certification if needed, then apply with lead time for the ≥10-day paper-exam approval rule or Metro scheduling. Burning both consecutive licensing-exam attempts without a study plan triggers a full calendar-year wait.

Official scopes follow Regulations Governing Pest Control Operators Section 101 and MDAC Weed and Pest Control materials:

WDIL - Wood destroying insect control. Termites, beetles, and other wood destroying insects in buildings and structures; Formosan termites attacking trees; optional UPL sub-exam. This is the path for Official Wood Destroying Insect Report and structural termite work - not assumed under GRCL.

GRCL - General pest and rodent control. Insect pests and pest animals invading structures and contents that do not normally attack the building itself; includes mosquito and biting fly work under subsection 101(4).

MBFL - Mosquito and biting fly control. Solely mosquito and biting fly control including misting systems and backpack applications. GRCL holders may request MBFL without a separate exam if operating a mosquito-only company - confirm structure with current BPI forms.

FUML - Fumigation pest control. Pest control by fumigation; a license or permit holder must be present when fumigant is released.

Match study to the category you will market. Adding categories later means another exam (and another $55 if computer-based) plus updated bond and insurance when coverage needs change.

Paper exams. Second Tuesday of January, April, July, and October at Mississippi State University in Starkville. Application must be approved at least 10 days before the exam date - build BPI review time on top of that minimum. BPI FAQ materials state no fee to apply and no fee for paper testing at quarterly MSU exams.

Computer-based exams. $55 each via Metro Institute (mississippi.metrosignup.com) at centers including Meridian, Oxford, Jackson, and Starkville. After a failed computer exam, wait 90 days before rescheduling.

Use the License and/or Permit Examination Application (Pest and Weed Control). Soft language: seating logistics and question counts beyond the facts pack are not invented - confirm on live MDAC and Metro instructions. Exam dates and center lists can shift; re-check the MDAC Weed and Pest Control page before every cycle.

Verified exam fees. License/permit exam application: no fee. Paper testing at quarterly MSU exams: no fee. Computer-based exam via Metro Institute: $55 each. After a failed computer exam: 90-day wait before reschedule.

Licensing exam retake rule. Two consecutive attempts per licensing exam; after a second failure, wait one full calendar year before reapplying. That clock is independent of the computer-exam 90-day reschedule wait.

Soft nulls. Company and Operator License issuance dollar fees were not published on reviewed MDAC pages - confirm on current BPI forms. Budget also for the $5,000 pest-category surety bond minimum and liability insurance at $100,000 per occurrence / $200,000 aggregate; those block a complete launch even when paper exams are free.

Mississippi splits reciprocity: commercial applicator certification may be reciprocal under agreement; Operator Licenses are not reciprocated with any state.

Commercial certification (conditional). Complete the Reciprocity Form and attach front and back of a valid out-of-state commercial certification card. Operator License (none). Out-of-state licensees - including from Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, or any other jurisdiction - must apply, be approved, and pass Mississippi Operator License exam(s).

Certification reciprocity alone does not authorize fee-for-service work, issue a Company License, waive bond or insurance, or replace Operator License exams. No official source reviewed authorizes pest control for hire in Mississippi before required Company License, Operator License, and related credentials are in place.

Operator Licenses, Permits, and Company Licenses run on three-year cycles. Within the 12 months preceding expiration, renew by attending a Bureau-approved training course or by retaking and passing the appropriate examinations. Waiting too long past expiration may require retesting rather than a simple renewal.

BPI reviews 180+ approved training courses annually (in-person, online, webinar); CE must be Bureau-approved. RTID renewal uses Bureau-approved training within 12 months before expiration (WDI/GRC/FUM RTIDs expire 36 months from issuance) - confirm current RTID forms rather than assuming Operator exam-retake rules apply identically. Common mistakes. Treating certification reciprocity as permission to bill; assuming Operator License reciprocity; burning both consecutive attempts; ignoring the $55 CBT fee and 90-day failure delay; advertising WDIL or FUML on GRCL-only exam success; assuming GRCL creates MBFL without confirming the mosquito-only without-exam request; quoting invented Company License issuance fees.
