Category G is required for every commercial applicator and pesticide dealer. Official category guidance states Category G alone does not authorize pesticide applications - additional category certification is required. Dealers with only Category G may sell pesticides but cannot apply without further categories.

Pass score. ARSD 12:56:05:02 requires at least 70 percent on each written examination furnished by the department, including Category G and every additional category.

Who needs it. Owner-operators, for-hire technicians, and dealer applicants all start here. Plan Category G and Category 8 on the same testing cycle for a structural launch menu.

Category 8 - Industrial, Institutional, Structural & Health Related. Pesticides in or around food-handling establishments, dwellings, institutions (schools, hospitals, prisons), industrial sites (manufacturing, warehouses, grain elevators), and adjacent structures; includes rodent and bird control in or around structures. Excludes government public-health vector programs (Category 9) and fumigation (Category 14). Standard structural startup exam after Category G.

Category 14 - Non-soil Fumigation. Buildings, enclosed spaces, commodities in bins or transit, and rodent burrows - not soil fumigation (Category 1). Category 8 alone does not authorize fumigation.

Category 15 - Wood Preservative. Wood-damaging pests on utility poles and lumber products; does not include fumigation (Category 14).

Category 4 - Ornamental & Turf. Maintained turf and ornamentals (lawns, parks, golf courses, cemeteries, athletic fields, greenhouses/nurseries) - separate from Category 8 structural work.

Category 9 - Public Health. Government or contracted applicators in government-sponsored vector programs. Not a substitute for Category 8.

Each category requires 70 percent. Add categories later by exam when the menu expands. Categories 10 and 11 were repealed in 2023 - ignore outdated national guides that still list them.

SDSU Extension schedules commercial certification exams at regional centers and participating county offices. Confirm unusual category fit with DANR (program contacts on Applicators and Dealers materials include 605-773-4432 and 605-773-3296), then book through current Extension instructions.

Session structure. SDSU Extension describes exams of about 30 - 70 questions with two to nine computer-provided references. You may schedule up to four hours per exam. Typical windows are 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. local time; site availability varies. Locate answers in the provided references - the same discipline as reading labels in the field.

Fee soft null. Reviewed pages do not show a separate DANR initial exam sitting fee. Confirm any current Extension or local charges on live materials before you travel.

Lapses and retakes. SDSU Extension states new applicators and those who allowed licenses to lapse must pass exams again. Retakes use the same 70 percent standard; restudy before rebooking. Confirm the live Extension testing page before every appointment.

Use official category language and South Dakota law summaries as primary sources. Category G. Master label interpretation, PPE, environmental precautions, and South Dakota vocabulary: certification versus paid license, February renewal, and the rule that Category G alone does not authorize applications.

Category 8. Focus on structural and health-related sites - dwellings, institutions, food-handling and industrial establishments, warehouses, grain elevators - and rodent/bird control in or around structures. Do not assume Category 8 covers fumigation or government vector programs.

Sequencing. Many operators pass Category G and 8, pay the license, launch structural services, then add Category 14 or 15 before marketing those lines. Dealer applicants need Category G plus a separate $75 two-year dealer license per RUP distribution location (SDCL 38-21-33.5) - not Category 8 structural authority. Recertification courses under ARSD 12:56:05:01 do not replace initial category exams.

License step. Certification alone does not finish the path. Pay the $35 two-year Commercial Pesticide Applicator License through DANR eCAT or mail the license application (SDCL 38-21-17). Both current certification and a paid license are required before for-hire application. Government employees may receive fee-exempt licenses valid only while applying in course of governmental employment.

Individual credentials. DANR issues individual applicator licenses, not a separate structural pest-control business entity license on reviewed materials. Each for-hire applicator needs their own exams and license.

Recertification by retest. ARSD 12:56:05:01 allows maintaining certification every two years by passing a written exam at 70%+ or attending a department-directed course (in-person or online). Fixed classroom-hour totals were not published on reviewed pages - confirm current coverage and approximate fees (DANR’s flowchart has listed about $65 in-person and about $15 per category online) on live eCAT materials. Recertify and renew by the last day of February in the year of expiration; SDCL 38-21-17.1 sets license expiration on the last day of February of the second year following issuance. A paid license is not valid without current certification.

SDCL 38-21-41 authorizes reciprocal exam waiver with states having substantially the same standards. DANR’s operational guide narrows the streamlined path to applicators who tested in and hold a current commercial applicator license from an adjoining state: Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, or Wyoming. Limits for exam planners. Submit the South Dakota license application, a copy of the current out-of-state license, and a color government photo ID - or use eCAT reciprocity upload. DANR verifies categories with the origin state (up to about 14 days per the guide), then you pay the $35 South Dakota license fee. Reciprocal certification validity tracks the origin license expiration (up to two years). Both categories and paid license must stay current. Broader statutory reciprocity beyond adjoining states may apply at secretary discretion - confirm with DANR. No reviewed source authorizes for-hire application before South Dakota certification and license are in place.
